What Kundli matching can tell you
Understand a traditional matching score, the questions to ask about it and the conversations a chart cannot replace.
What is being compared?
Kundli matching is a traditional Jyotish practice used when discussing a possible marriage. It compares information from two birth charts. One common method, Ashtakoota, often called Guna Milan, uses eight named factors and a total score out of 36. It draws on the Moon’s sign and birth nakshatra—the lunar division occupied by the Moon at birth—in each chart. Other aspects of the charts may be discussed alongside that score.
These are categories within a traditional system. A score is not a percentage chance that a marriage will succeed, and it is not a complete description of either person. It cannot tell you whether both people want the relationship or how they will handle everyday disagreements.
Why the score needs an explanation
Matching methods and the way their results are interpreted differ. Even commonly used matching tools give different score groupings and qualifications. Ask which method is being used rather than relying on a number without its explanation.
You may hear terms such as Nadi and Bhakoot, two categories in Ashtakoota matching, or Mangal Dosha, a separate traditional assessment involving Mars. Ask how each affects the interpretation and what information it depends on. Do not treat a traditional label as a medical diagnosis or proof of someone’s character. There is no guaranteed marriage outcome from a score or a suggested ritual.
Prepare both people’s birth details
Have the birth date and birthplace for both people ready, along with the time when it is known. Share another person’s details only with their permission. Check whether a time is documented or remembered approximately, and explain any uncertainty.
If one time is unknown, select the unknown option for that person. Do not fill in a convenient time to complete the form. Ask what can be discussed from the available details and which parts need a more reliable time. Birth information and personal questions belong in the private consultation, not a public message or calendar description.
Questions to bring to the consultation
You can ask: Which part of the comparison matters most in this reading? Does an uncertain birth time change it? Are you describing a traditional concern or a definite prediction? What questions should we discuss ourselves after the consultation?
You do not need to know the vocabulary in advance. Ask for the explanation in ordinary language and take notes if you want to return to it later. A consultation should leave you able to understand the interpretation, including its limits.
Keep the relationship conversation open
Both people need room to discuss their own expectations. Talk about where you want to live, work and family responsibilities, and how you handle money. Consent and mutual respect matter regardless of a matching score.
If there is a serious conflict, coercion or a safety concern, appropriate personal and professional support is more relevant than further chart scoring. A Kundli consultation offers a traditional perspective; the decision about the relationship remains with the people involved.
